Project # 3:  Meteorology Extra Credit Project (6th grade only)

Next click the reading page.  You can either print the reading page, or answer the questions while viewing it on your computer: reading.doc

Make your own Shaduuf! (only during the unit!)

Visit the Mr. Z's 6th Grade Class Page.   (See Mr. Z  before you begin.)

From there, locate the Egyptian unit page.

Find the link for "shaduf" and click to that page.

Review the various resource articles, demos, and pictures listed on the Shaduf page.

ASSEMBLY your own working model of a Shaduf.

HAND IT IN: complete with a written explanation telling us what it is, why is was used, how it worked, and who used it.

Your model and "report" will be added to the A - Team Museum !!

DIFFUSION AND OSMOSIS:  Here is a quick exercise:

You need two grapes, some sugar, and two cups of water.  Supersaturate one of the water cups. (That means that you add enough sugar to the cup of water until no more sugar dissolves in the cup). Next, add one grape to the cup of plain water, and one grape to the cup with both sugar and water.  OBSERVE the result over the next 24 hours.

Volcanoes and Earthquakes:                                               

Step 1: Read the following on line discussion by the USGS on Volcanoes (on line book)  Read the first two section, "The Nature of Volcanoes" and "The Principal Types of Volcanoes".

From your reading of section one, and section two summarize the four different types of volcanoes.

Step 2:  Go to the USGS site:  www.usgs.gov

First, what does USGS stand for and what do they do

Next, Choose two volcanoes described somewhere on this web site and find out the following information:  Location, Last Eruption, & Type of Volcano.  

Lastly for each volcano you chose, describe some of its salient characteristics.

Step 3 Again go to the USGS site.

Select Earthquakes

Select the FAQ column, then select Earthquakes, Faults and Plate Tectonics.  Summarize and label on your paper the first six subsections of this FAQ section

Return to the USGS page on Earthquakes.  Select Earthquake activity and do the following:  (1)Briefly explain the table of the latest earthquake information ( what is it?), (2)describe where some of the most recent earthquakes occurred and when and how often, (3) describe any surprising information you may have learned by reading the table.

Step 4  Go the following USGS Web-site: (Click here)

look at the site index and select "N"

report 5 pieces of information about the earthquake activity in New York State or New England.

Conclusion:   The above extra credit lab is a lot of work, it should take about 2 hours.  However, the amount of extra credit is substantial and the wealth of information you will learn is will only serve to help you in future science projects.  My goal is simple:  That these sites fascinate you and that you will want to explore these web sites further.   (End.)
